Eerie Tales

    (Super, 1963-1964)

Eerie Tales appeared in the early 1960s and reprinted pre-code horror and mystery stories from Star Publications titles like Blue Bolt, Spook and Purple Claw. A bit more literary and pulp magazine-oriented than the buckets of blood style of most pre-code horror books, these stories stand up fairly well despite the often crude illustration and cheaper-than-cheap printing process. Eerie Tales featured classic monsters like ghouls, werewolves and vampires alongside contemporary shock-thrillers of psycho killers and sadists. Eerie Tales appeared without the nearly ubiquitous seal of the Comics Code Authority (and for good reason!), and was probably unable to get decent distribution as a result. Only a handful of (apparently randomly numbered) issues are known to have been printed.
