Fuzz & Pluck in Splitsville
(Fantagraphics, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2008)
™ and © Fantagraphics Books, Inc.
In the second of a scheduled four-part series, this odd couple gets out of and into more trouble than weird creatures have a right to. Fuzz is a stuffed teddy bear, a little worse for wear, and Pluck is literally a plucked chicken, naked and scrawny. In this episode, both must separately survive their own gauntlet of terrors.
In a scene reminiscent of Toy Story, a little girl takes Fuzz to meet her collection of off-kilter toys that live in her bedroom. Since all Fuzz wants to do is go home, the other stuffed animals oblige by tossing him out the window. Meanwhile, Pluck finds himself in the middle of gladiatorial combat between two opposing teams of animals. Forced to defend himself with any handy blunt object, can this bird live down being called a “chicken”?
Known for being a storyboard artist for such MTV shows as Beavis and Butthead and Daria, Ted Stearn creates a strange and unnerving world. The protagonists are punching bags in a world all too eager to dispense hard knocks, and Stearn’s whimsical lines belie a semi-sick and twisted view of childhood play gone completely awry. However, making sense of this wacky nightmare may take another installment or two.
