Popo Can
(Infinity, 2005)
™ and © Infinity Productions
Yasuharu brings home a limited-edition version of a simulation game, and a theoretically beautiful “videogame girl” named Popomi pops out of his television (smashing the screen in the process) and proceeds… to do nothing but sit around his apartment drinking beer and reading comics. Of course, more characters from the videogame world pop up, such as a robot that prefers domestic chores (at least, for once, it’s male) and a fox-eared girl named Hiropon who supposedly exists to be her enemy but never poses much of a threat.
It’s hard to decide whom to dislike more, the videogame-addled Yasuharu or the crude and totally useless Popomi. The level of the humor can be summed up by the fact that, when she “levels up,” her breasts grow. (Yasuharu’s reaction: “cow boobies.”) The art is ugly, not exactly super-deformed, but definitely stunted. Clearly, it’s supposed to be a parody of the video-girl genre but “something was lost in translation” pretty much sums up this one.
