Early on, Eclipse was an innovator in seeing the idea of stand-alone works for a more mature audience, and also in bringing a number of classics to the attention of a new audience. Its graphic novel line, though, was a real hodge-podge of reprints (both of its own and other companies work from the 1940s to present day), translations and original material, produced in a number of formats that we might not easily recognize as graphic novels today. For titles also having their own series, look under that entry.

Among the most important reprint collections are Zorro (2 volumes), collecting Alex Toth’s superb work on the Dell series; Zorro In Old California, more swashbuckling adventures by Nedaud and Marcello, translated from the French; and Real Love, a collection of Simon and Kirby romance strips from the 1950s. Fast Fiction reprints a rather poor version of Rider Haggard’s She, by Vincent Napoli, which originally appeared in the Fast Fiction series Famous Authors Illustrated.

The rest of the original material is of very mixed quality. Worth a look is Brought to Light, a hard-hitting political book containing two stories about American atrocities in Central America, one written by Alan Moore and the other by Joyce Brabner. The desire to instruct occasionally gets the better of the pacing, but Bill Sienkiewicz’s elliptical art on Moore’s script gives it subtlety. Floyd Farland, by a then nineteen-year-old Chris Ware, reworks his newspaper strips from The Daily Texan. In an Orwell-style dictatorship, Floyd is so conformist that the authorities think he’s involved with a new, subversive movement, but he’s immune to their brainwashing techniques because he already believes.

A curiosity, in light of his extraordinary later work, Stewart the Rat is Steve Gerber’s rather unsuccessful attempt to recreate the satirical appeal of Howard The Duck, drawn by Gene Colan. Sisterhood of Steel, by Christy Marx and Peter Ledger, continues their story from Epic Illustrated about an island of female mercenaries and is pappy stuff, if prettily drawn. Samurai, Son of Death is a U.S./Japanese collaboration. Sherman DiVono (writer) and Hiroshi Hirata (artist) base their tale on 16th-century Japanese history for a story about a samurai who seems to have returned from the dead.

Finally, there are two real curiosities: Pigeons from Hell is Scott Hampton’s adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s quite awful epic poem (poetry was the very least of Howard’s accomplishments, way down the list below shooting, mother-fixation and self-pity); and XYR is a choose-your-own-plot fantasy story. It’s rather like a role-playing game book, where you read different bits in different orders, depending on what you feel like. ~NF
