Years ago, in The Amazing Spider-Man # 149, the Wallcrawler came face to face with…himself. The second Peter Parker turned out to be a clone, created by the villainous Jackal. Adopting the name Ben Reilly, the clone left to pursue his own life. Like the original, he eventually donned a costume and fought crime as the Scarlet Spider. Later, it was revealed that Ben Reilly is the original after all, and Peter is the clone! Bit by bit, Peter Parker’s life is stripped away and his confidence is shattered.

At this point in time there are at least two other versions of Peter Parker, with their own unique powers. Kaine’s agenda is still unknown, but the psychotic Spidercide seems fully under the Jackal’s control, whose ultimate goal appears to be the replacement of all humanity with his own genetically-enhanced creations.

This story continues throughout the regular Spidey titles, before concluding in Spider-Man: Maximum Clonage Omega.
