What if Karen Page Had Lived?
(Marvel, 2005)
™ and © 2004 Marvel Characters, Inc.
When Daredevil was relaunched as Daredevil (Vol. 2) with new numbering in 1998, writer/filmmaker Kevin Smith took the helm, and the first story arc saw the death of Matt Murdoch’s long–time love Karen Page at the hands of Bullseye. This event was the first of a series of disheartening and overwhelming incidents that have plagued Daredevil through several changes of writers. In this title, a man at a lunch counter who curiously resembles the writer at the time, Brian Michael Bendis, asks the reader, “What If Karen Page Had Lived?” What follows is not the “happily-ever-after” scenario that the title might suggest.
This one–shot title was part of special What If… month from Marvel in 2004 that recalled the What If…? series from the 1970s and 1980s that were Marvel’s answer to DC’s Imaginary Stories. Other questions asked in this special event month included: What If Dr. Doom Had Become the Thing? and What If General Ross Had Become the Hulk?
