Journey into Unknown Worlds

Journey Into Unknown Worlds was a science-fiction/horror title from Atlas (pre-Marvel) Comics published during the 1950s. It was atypical of Atlas fare at that time in the relative subtlety of its approach. The horror was of a more “isn’t that strange” flavor than the “eeww! gross!” approach favored by other Atlas horror books such as Mystic. And the science fiction was more literary and fantasy-oriented than the bug-eyed monsters and space operas popular in other titles. Top-line artists like Joe Kubert, Steve Ditko, Al Williamson, Reed Crandall, and the under-rated Angelo Torres all graced its pages with fine, detailed work. Journey Into Unknown Worlds therefore did not seem as likely to suffer when the Comics Code came in during the mid-1950s, but, quality notwithstanding, it did not survive the Atlas implosion of 1957.
