Mike Donovan Detective Comic
(Arnold)
™ and © Arnold Book Company
As the golden age of comics that dawned in America in the late 30s rippled around the world, it was inevitable that publishers in Europe and elsewhere would see the value (and profit) in producing their own titles. Special Agent Mike Donovan Detective Comic is, if nothing else, illustrative of the problems that the comic book medium initially had in translation to other cultures. While early American comics like Slam Bradley (the obvious inspiration for Donovan) are crude, Mike Donovan is merely sloppy. It’s as if someone saw a copy of Detective Comics #1 and imitated the craftlessness without capturing the essential amateur enthusiasm. However, the title seemed popular enough to run quite a few issues, with distribution in England and France.
