When Dominique (“Nikki”) Sinclair was a child, her hero was her father. It was only as she grew older that she began to realize what sort of life he led. He was Mafioso—a “made man.” With it came certain occupational hazards. Nikki still recalls the family picnic where daddy was dragged in for emergency care, having been shot through the chest and narrowly escaped death. When she grew older, Nikki joined the FBI, then became a private investigator. Most of all, she swore that she would not grow up to be like her parents.

When Nikki takes up the case of investigating a trucker engaged in insurance fraud, she stumbles across a more sinister scheme than just fencing stolen goods. Then, when fraud turns into murder, Nikki learns that not only is she more like her parents than she’d willingly admit—but that her life may depend on the lessons she learned from her unusual upbringing.
