The Death of Stupidman
(Parody, 1993)
™ and ©1993 Parody Press
Parody Press! does a wonderful job at living up to its name. Case in point: The imprint’s take on one of the most shocking stories to ever hit the racks, The Death of Superman. But the publisher does not stop with just a straight parody. Rather, it goes on to mock several other industry conventions, such as variant covers, buxom super-heroines and the inevitable return from the grave for most of the medium’s deceased heroes.
What makes The Death of Stupidman so entertaining is not only its blatant attack on the original story, but the targeting of other equally ridiculous themes and characters in the vein of comics. Heroes from all three major publishers—DC, Marvel and Image—popup to lend Stupidman a hand in battle against the deadly Gloomsday (a monster made entirely of cereal). Following The Death of Superman closely, Parody Press! uses clever wit and playful sarcasm to return comics to their most rudimentary level—funny stories meant to entertain through laughter.
