In the mid-1940s, the funny animals boom was in full swing. With Chuck Jones and Robert McKimson making it look easy on the screen and Carl Barks weaving effortless-looking classics on the comics page, every publisher rushed a menagerie of crafty characters into print. Foxy Fagan is a typical effort, owing a lot to Tom and Jerry as well as the Warner Brothers stable.

Foxy is a clever goof in the Bugs Bunny mold. His foil is a hapless canine inventor, Bobble, filling the Porky Pig role (though he bears a striking resemblance to the later Hanna Barbara character Droopy Dog). Pete and Tweet enact the eternal cat-and-canary routine, while Little Buck is a troublesome Indian tot, after the notorious “Song of Haiwatha” Bugs Bunny short (now withdrawn from syndication).
