Little Nemo in Slumberland 3-D
(Blackthorne, 1987)
©1987 King Features Syndicate, Inc.
This is the story of a little boy and his remarkable dreams. As soon as the little boy, Nemo, nods off, he enters the wondrous Slumberland, where he adventures accompanied by a friendly Zulu savage and a clown named Flip. It’s a fantastic place, made even more so by the 3-D treatment of this comic. Cliffs seem miles high, streets go on forever, and stairwell bannisters twist and turn into the distance. Of course, these tricks require that the reader wear special glasses with a red and blue lens (sadly, not included with this comic).
Little Nemo in Slumberland was one of the earliest comics, originally appearing in 1905 as a reprint of strips from the Sunday supplement of the New York Herald. The series was created by Winsor McCay, who also created Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend (from which the modern series Roarin’ Rick’s Rarebit Fiends takes its name and concept.)
