When the Ninth Men had reached the twilight of their great civilization, they chose three of their kind to be placed in suspended animation. When they awoke 15,000 years later, they were to help the Tenth Men—us—to avoid the cycle of destruction that had plagued all the previous civilizations of mankind.

The three who were chosen for this task were Night Glider, a woman with the power of flight; Captain Glory, a celebrated warrior; and Bombast, the hurler, who had the power to throw objects with incredible speed and accuracy, making him a powerful friend—or a deadly foe. When these three finally awoke, 150 centuries after being placed in suspended animation, they discovered a strange new world. Worse, they discovered an old menace—two of their former leaders had themselves survived, intent on claiming this new world for themselves!
