Dead@17: Blood of Saints

There’s nothing more rewarding than reading a truly great series from a small publisher. Dead@17 is clever, witty, well written and drawn, and well timed to capture the audience left by the ending of Buffy. This second mini-series picks up shortly after the conclusion of the first mini-series, and Josh Howard doesn’t miss a beat. If anything, he’s picking up steam as he goes along. The demon from last series, after not being able to inhabit Nara’s body, still searches for a host and a way to return to Earth. It seems another dead teen will serve just fine. Once again, it’s Nara, Hazy, Noel, and Elijah to the rescue, but things may not have gone as smoothly as they believe. Looks as if readers will have to wait until the next mini-series for the answers. Luckily, that new series is on sale now.

This series is a breath of fresh air in a comic-book landscape overflowing with redundant super-hero material. The story is fresh and should appeal to teens and adults. Howard’s characters have life. You can imagine seeing these kids around your town or at the mall. And the art, though it is manga-influenced, is very appealing even to those who aren’t fans of the style.
