In the quiet town of Kurozu-cho, strange things are happening. People have become mesmerized by images of spirals. Some have transformed into human worms, others into slimy snails, and yet more into blood-sucking zombies. Suffice to say the body count keeps rising. So teen-ager Kirie and her boyfriend Shuichi are in a race to uncover the reason why before they, too, succumb to the sinister vortex that surrounds them.

In this third and final installment, Kirie and Shuichi seek shelter from the growing disaster. However, there is no safe place to hide, when vengeful townsfolk can spin tornados out of thin air. Can anyone escape this twisted curse? Finally, the duo finds the center of the phenomenon: a coiling avenue of homes that ominously leads to the blackest hole of them all.

Japan’s answer to Stephen King, Ito has a gift for making terrifying horror stories. Uzumaki (“whirlpool”) excels at unnerving the reader with freaky exaggerations and surprisingly scary situations. Not for the faint of heart, this is an atypical gorefest that gets under your skin, percolates with paranoia, and explodes into the unknown.
