Marvel: Portraits of a Universe

™ and ©1995 Marvel Entertainment Group

Portraits of a Universe was a four-issue mini-series that tied in with Marvel’s line of trading cards. Each issue folded out to show some fourteen scenes from Marvel history, complete with narration. The scenes were chosen not so much for their historical importance as they were for being able to convey a strong image. They include, for instance, Spider-Man versus the Punisher from Amazing Spider-Man #285, or Hobgoblin versus Spider-Man from Spider-Man #6. The scenes were painted by a variety of artists, primarily newcomers, although old favorites like Simon Bisley also appear from time to time.
