Shadows & Light

    (Marvel, 1998)
™ and ©1998 Marvel Characters, Inc.

This anthology title boasts top creators like Brian Stelfreeze, Bernie Wrightson, and Steve Ditko telling short stories of various Marvel characters working only in black-and-white.

While most black-and-white comics are done as such for cost reasons, this is a great example of how, in some cases, it actually can make for more effective storytelling. Stelfreeze mimics the high contrast approach of Frank Miller’s Sin City, giving a dark, clean edge to his Daredevil story “Devils & Angels.” Stelfreeze, on the other hand, uses a very finished, painted look on his Black Widow story, “Free Fall,” giving the flashback story a sort of “old movie” feel which complements it beautifully.
