Gold Digger: Beta
(Antarctic, 1998)
™ and ©1998 Antarctic Press
Whether it takes its major inspiration from Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft, or both, those influences are on display here in this manga-style comic. Two pairs of rival explorer-adventurers, all female, do heated battle in their respective quests to uncover earth’s greatest archaeological secrets wherever they might be and no matter how great the danger. On one side, the cool and confident Penny Pincer and her somewhat cowardly, genetically engineered companion. On the other, envious and competitive Gina and her sister, the were-cheetah Britanny. Sometimes working against each other, sometimes forced to work together, the rivalry persists across this lighthearted series. The obstacles can be anything from each other to a strange alien creature (the “Beta” of the title) made of silver—a special problem, of course, for the otherwise powerful were-cheetah.
Full-color from Antarctic Press, the title is created, written, and drawn by Fred Perry.
