Fishing around for a “hit” following the post-war collapse of super-hero comics, Marvel (here a.k.a. Margood) Comics turned briefly to a staple theme from the 1920s, so-called college humor, with Frankie Comics. Frankie Fuddle, an irresponsible, somewhat witless, but always likeable college student in the standard uniform of hat, bow-tie, and sport coat, manages to get himself in every variety of girl trouble in the course of the 3-5 short stories in each issue. The formula usually featured stock characters like the bullying football star, the nerdy “brain” and lots and lots of pretty girls.

Unfortunately the GI Bill and the realities of postwar America eroded the fundamental assumptions of 1920s-style college humor— namely that colleges were the exclusive preserve of spoiled rich kids with nothing better to do than pull pranks and chase skirts—and Frankie Comics withered away by 1949.
