Red Wolf

    (Marvel, 1972-1973)
™ and ©1972 Marvel Characters, Inc.

Billed as the first Native American super-hero to appear in comics, Red Wolf debuted in Avengers #80 as an embittered young Indian radical bent on stopping the exploitation of his people and their reservation lands by unscrupulous businessmen. When he next appears in Marvel Spotlight (Vol. 1) #1, the scene has shifted to the Old West and Red Wolf is actually the ancestor of the original character. It is this Old West Red Wolf who won his own book in the early 1970s, with solid art by veteran pen Syd Shores and writing chores by Golden Age pro Gardner Fox. The title was a low-key effort, and Marvel probably enjoyed more public relations benefits from the title than sales. Red Wolf wrapped up his run with issue #9 in 1973.
