Fighting American (Mini-Series)

    (DC, 1994)
DC

This six-issue mini-series resurrects Simon and Kirby’s cold war super-hero for a new struggle in the confusing ’90s. As this series tells it, the original Fighting American, Johnny Flagg, was gunned down in 1984. In a desperate bid to avenge him, his brother Nelson agreed to take part in a strange experiment. Nelson was placed in a tank of fluid for nine years, during which his consciousness was transformed into his brother’s super-powered body. Now he is the new Fighting American.

There’s only one problem: The “Fighting American” was originally created at the height of the Cold War to battle the “red menace” (one reason for the failure of the original 1950s Fighting American series). This new Fighting American was created at the very end of that conflict. Now when Nelson emerges from his transformation, he finds that the war for which he was created to fight, is long since over. Whatever is he to do now?
