It Girl

    (Oni, 2002)

You read that right; it said Oni Press, not AAA Pop. When Atomics creator Mike Allred was calling for suggestions of artists to interpret his characters, Oni’s Chynna Clugston-Major on It Girl was proposed — and here it is!

The Atomics are no longer a super-team; they’re a band. Guitarist and love interest Adam is a no-show, so it’s It Girl to the rescue. This story may be a little too “soap opera” for some readers’ tastes, but it’s a solid, insightful tale about a popular character. Its romantic overtones might even make it an issue that comics guys can share with their ladies. (Yes, comics-reading males can have girlfriends!)

Clugston-Major’s style is perfectly suited to the tone of the story, as well as to Allred’s characters. Kudos also have to be given to colorist Han Allred. Colorists are often overlooked when evaluating a comic book, because, when their work is done well, the reader often isn’t even aware of how much it enhances a story. This issue has dark moments that are well-conveyed, while still colors are still kept vibrant, something we don’t see enough of.

We are promised that more of these suggested collaborations will be forthcoming. Hey, Mike — as long as you’re taking requests, how about an It Girl/U-Go Girl one shot?
