The Will Eisner Companion
(DC, 2004)
™ and © DC Comics, Inc.
What would one put into a book called The Will Eisner Companion? One might put a comprehensive A–to–Z of Eisner’s Spirit work. Cataloging such obscure references as Borschtbelt Buttermilk, Tooty Compote, and Kretchma, complete with pictures and appearance dates, could be of great importance to comics historians. One might also choose to examine Eisner’s groundbreaking graphic novels. From A Contract with God and Life on Another Planet through The Dreamer and To the Heart of the Storm right up to Sundiata and Fagin the Jew, Eisner’s works are deserving of study, in addition to their ongoing acclaim.
Either of these would make it well worth purchasing a book called The Will Eisner Companion. This book has both of them. (There are a few other articles and essays, including an introduction by Dennis O’Neil and an afterword by Denis Kitchen, but they’re all eclipsed by the two main sections.) [And though] the graphic novel section is perhaps more summary and less analysis than one might otherwise hope, but you have to leave the authors room for an encore.
— Jack Abramowitz
