Majestic: Strange New Visitor

Majestic (obviously someone thought the “Mr.” was silly) leaps from Earth–WildStorm to the DC universe and uses his accidental sabbatical to learn more about his humanity, reflect on his past, and deal with threats large and small. Creators have tried different approaches to turn a character created to be a Superman doppelgänger into something vaguely original. Originally, he was cast as a cold alien warlord who only pretended to be a super–hero, then there was Joe Casey’s recent attempt to make him more of a Silver Age–style champion (complete with boy sidekick and secret lair). This version splits the difference, using a wonderfully staged coffee klatch with Superman to set Majestic off on an awkward quest to connect with mankind via a truly humble secret identity. It’s basic, entry–level super–hero stuff but done with a deft touch. Moreover, it’s nice to see a super–hero who can take an abusive school coach just as seriously as some menace from outer space. If only Superman were regularly this well–written and –drawn.
