Shi: Rekishi

The two issues of this 1997 series do a nice job of summing up the rekishi (“history”) of the various Shi and Tomoe titles to date. It’s done in the form of journal entries of the two detectives assigned to investigate the case, accompanied by striking, pinup-style illustrations.

The beginning of Shi: The Way of the Warrior started out very much resembling a typical revenge/action comic. Creator William Tucci’s appreciation of Japanese culture and subtlety in developing his characters soon set it apart from the pack. This special series shows how far the series has progressed, and bridges the way for the new Shi: The Series title introduced in 1998.
