Zillions of copies of Batman Adventures #1 were handed out on Free Comic Book Day, giving the series widespread promotion among hardcore as well as casual comic book fans. Both audiences should thoroughly embrace the title, since it is entertaining as well as accessible, especially for those who enjoy Batman the Animated Series and other cartoons of its ilk. The series continues the fun, as Harley Quinn voices her frustrations with a kinder, gentler Joker, whose violent ways have been watered down by intensive therapy sessions conducted by “those head-shrinking creeps” at Arkham Asylum. A backup story, which ties into the lead, finds Harley and Ivy doing time at the Gotham Penitentiary.

Both tales capture the personalities as well as the over-the-top antics of the characters extremely well. And, on a larger scale, Harley’s disgust with The Joker is a playful, yet clever mocking of blonde bimbos (and women in general) who are sexually attracted to “bad guys.” The codependent nature of their on–again off–again relationship is a funhouse–mirror–image of reality, and their anarchic behavior speaks to the boredom they feel living in a hyper-safe wannabe, modern world (filled with seatbelt laws, political correctness, and dietary gurus). Either way you slice it, this is top–notch comic book entertainment for readers of all stripes.
