After their comic debut in Dell Giant #48, Dell commissioned a regular series of Hanna-Barbera’s highly popular primetime animated cartoon series. The comic proved to be so popular, Gold Key retained the numbering when it assumed the series. At 70 issues, The Flintstones was the Hanna-Barbera comic book series with the highest numbers until DC’s Scooby-Doo series surpassed that in the first decade of the 21st century. The title was so successful that it outlasted the prime time series that it was spawned from by four years and then continued (with new numbering) by Charlton when they took on the license.
