Tor (DC)

    (DC, 1975-1976)
DC

Tor was a caveman who lived in the savage world of a million years ago. In that time, he was a fierce fighter who possessed the strength necessary for survival. But even in that savage world there was a place for honor, wisdom, and learning that sometimes the best way to overcome an enemy is not to smash him over the head with a stone axe.

Joe Kubert is famous for his work on Tarzan, but nothing he has done is more powerful than his work on Tor. The idea for Tor came to him while on a troop ship heading to Korea. It seemed that throughout history, mankind has had violence flowing through its veins, and that history has always been a struggle to overcome the urge to kill one another. In creating Tor, he shows us a world where the lessons of history are reduced to their primal elements. (Many years later, moviegoers would see a similar view in the opening sequences of Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001, a Space Odyssey.)
