Street Angel

A breezy, fun to read comic book, Street Angel stars the title character as a tough but likable young girl who is a demon on (skateboard) wheels and a master of martial arts. She fights for the poor and downtrodden in an “unforgiving world overrun with poverty, drug abuse, nepotism, and ninjas.” Like earlier issues of Ben Edlund’s The Tick, Street Angel is filled with ninja humor, much of it funny, including a ninja “shirts and skins” basketball game.

The central bad guy in this tongue-in-cheek tale is Dr. Pangea, who is, amusingly enough, the “deadliest geologist of the last 1,000 years.” His Dr. Evil-like plan to unleash a giant laser on earth (kidnapping the mayor’s daughter in the process) gives Street Angel a mission, which she takes on with sassy, brassy, youthful abandon. Suffice to say, a number of ninjas are slain.

Interwoven with the humor and the action is more than a hint of social satire involving the haves and have-nots. Speaking of which, it is much better to have this comic book than not have it.
