Sable (Mike Grell’s…)

Mike Grell was perhaps best known for his landmark work for DC on Green Arrow before creating Sable for indie publisher First. In 1990, First Publishing began reprinting the original adventure series Jon Sable, Freelance under the title “Mike Grell’s Sable.”

The title character leads a duel life as a freelance security expert/bodyguard/paladin-for-hire—while at the same time working as a popular childrens’ book author under the pen name “B. B. Flemm.” It’s an interesting premise which comes to life thanks to Grell’s skillful storytelling. Long known as a master of the action genre, Grell does a remarkable job of going beyond the clichés of the adventure genre to give his characters real depth and feeling.
