Grenuord

    (Fantagraphics, 2005)
™ and ©2005 Francesco Ghermandi

It’s a little like watching a Tool video made into a comic, but with slightly more humor. It doesn’t state anything of the kind, but reading Grenuord, one gets the feeling that there’s a very tyrannical government running all levels of society, and the apocalypse may be just around the corner. There’s no guarantee that our narrator George is reliable in anything he tells us. In fact, he’s a murderous drifter with definite paranoia and possible schizophrenia. This story feels like charcoal tastes, though that’s meant as a positive remark, in that the book seems to achieve its singular objective. Francesca Ghermandi’s work seems to be the sort of thing you’d enjoy very much if you like Warren Ellis’ work, and be utterly depressed by if you’re not. Fortunately, more people seem to favor Ellis than dislike him, so maybe they’ll check Ghermandi surrealist, industrial work out.
