The Hunting

    (Northstar, 1993)
™ and ©1993 Arpad Publishing

In this shock-horror work, a young man gets chased by a pack of vicious werewolves for 28 pages and then decides to become a werewolf (and vampire) killer.

Issue #1 is an origin tale with no actual story, save a hint at an abused childhood and visual gags offered by the bus driver. Really confusing panel placement doesn’t help, but at least the quality white paper shows off the strong black art. As a bonus, a color poster inside demonstrates in gory detail what happens when a person gets caught by a pack of vicious werewolves, in case you missed that part.

In 1993, writer Raphael Nieves was nominated for an Eisner for Bloodlines: A Tale from the Heart of Africa, while artist Andy Dimitt went on to create items for Kabuki. The Hunting came out under Northstar editor-in-chief Brian Azzarello, who later earned acclaim penning 100 Bullets from Vertigo. Which just goes to show that everybody has to go through a learning curve before hitting their stride.
