The bullets that killed President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963 left deep scars on American culture, scars that still persist today. The tragic death of the young and vibrant president evoked an almost mythic sense of tragedy, and gave birth to a small industry of memorabilia and commemorative items, among which was the John F. Kennedy life story comic book from Dell. The comic book features a photo of Kennedy against a red, white, and blue background, captioned with his famous call to action, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Inside is the story of his life and legend, from the heroic rescue of his PT boat crew during World War II to his nervy brinksmanship in diffusing the Cuban Missile Crisis. It’s innocent kitsch from a simpler time.
