Jim Mahfood’s Stupid Comics is not for everyone. The fact that some of it deals with current American politics will be enough to turn some people off, but one thing is clear: Mahfood demonstrates that he is a fresh, strong voice in comics with Stupid Comics.

Mahfood demonstrates confidence in what he likes and believes. It is obvious, for example, that he is a huge fan of rap music, especially in his “Remember When Ice Cube Was Dope” review of Cube’s four albums from 1990 to 1993. He even provides an incident in which a fan at a con tells him that he thought Mahfood was black. Mahfood responds, “Well, I’m half Arab. That makes me one fourth black, right?” (Readers who aren’t fans of rap music may find that some of the stories either make no sense or they just won’t care for them.)

At its best, Stupid Comics is far from its title: It provides excellent political and social commentary from someone who loves the world he lives in, wants to see it improve, and is passionate about the things he enjoys.
