Danger Comics

The title’s not a gag; there really was a Danger Comics published back in 1993, a self–published series that lasted all of three issues. In fact, the new ultimate collection even includes new framing sequences by an older and more experienced Bill Jankowski and Mark Gallivan; their talents have improved, but these sequences do more to highlight the weaknesses of the old stories rather than enhance them.

Understand: The material isn’t bad by any means; it’s actually funny throughout and light enough to carry its undue length. But there are frequent jarring shifts from light–heartedness to mean–spiritedness, the stories lean toward preachiness at times, and there are dated parodies of such celebrities as Mike Tyson. It’s enough to make one wonder just why this decent, but unremarkable, series saw the light of resurrection after all this time.

So just what was this series, anyway? Despite its shortcomings, it’s a likeable enough detective parody and an answer of sorts to the question: What if Mike Hammer were a super–hero?
