A bizarre idea. Super-hero publishers Marvel note the popularity of underground comix five years after everyone else, so decide to produce one of their own. But hey, just in case those crazy underground cartoonists include sex and drug use in their work why not put it out under another imprint? Despite the warped logic of wanting to absorb something successful, but only if it can conform to their corporate standards, Comix Book manages to entice a fair number of the underground greats over five issues. It’s a patchy anthology, though, with only Howard Cruse, John Pound, Sharon Rudahl, and Skip Williamson consistently approaching top form, although Art Spiegelman previews Maus in #2. The marriage between Marvel and the underground appears to have ended over the matter of creators’ rights, so Kitchen Sink published material already commissioned for the following issues. Ironically and entirely coincidentally they’re the best of the run, with #5 a real quality package. In addition to Cruse, Pound, Rudahl, and Williamson there’s good stuff from Bob Armstrong, Leslie Cabarga, Gary Hallgren, Richards, and Murphy; and Justin Green finishes the very odd “We Fellow Traveleers” started in the first issue. ~FP
