One Plus One

Down-on-his-luck Eddie is a high-stakes gambler (with a pregnant girlfriend) who’s itching to change his life and go straight. Suave and unassuming David has not only the mysterious gift of knowing the fate of others, but also the power to make sure that their fate is met. And weary Leonard tires of his own disturbing gift: the ability to see people as they look — after they’re dead. So there’s one man who wants to change his destiny, another who wants it to stay just the way it is, and yet another who can tip the balance either way.

Artist Daniel Krall turns in crisp illustrations, but the story’s flow is slowed a bit by the hard-edged transitions between scenes with similar settings. And readers unaccustomed to Krall’s style might have trouble differentiating between a couple of the characters. With similar-looking characters drinking in similar-looking bars, less attentive readers might miss transitions initially and get momentarily derailed.
