This limited series retells the origins of the original X-Men—Cyclops, the Beast, the Angel, Iceman, and Marvel Girl—and the story of their recruitment by Professor Charles Xavier for his School for Gifted Youngsters. The story focuses on the outcast status of mutants in the Marvel Universe—how they are curiosities and experiments-in-waiting, how they are hated and feared—before Professor X enters their lives, helps them master their mutant abilities, and sells them on his dream of a world in which mutants and humans live in perfect harmony.

Meanwhile, master of magnetism Magneto is recruiting young mutants, too; he wants to establish a brotherhood that will crush humanity, make them pay for their intolerance of mutants. How will the young would-be X-Men respond to Magneto’s offer? There are some surprises in this retelling of X-history.
