Marvel Chillers: The Thing in The Glass Case
(Marvel, 1997)
™ and © Marvel Characters, Inc.
The X-Men meets R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps in the Marvel comic book/novel amalgamation Chillers. Meant to appeal to the imprint’s younger readers, the title features large print, one black and white illustration per chapter, and a full-color poster insert—typically a reprint of the cover graphic.
The series follows the adventures of Dana Van Helsing and her group of prep school friends as they inadvertently stumble across the Marvel Universe’s supernatural characters. Helping them along the way are various members from the mutant super-hero team the X-Men, connected to the young girl through her well-known aunt. Vampires, mummies, and other unearthly freaks pit themselves against the lead characters in such a way as to frighten, yet by story’s end, wrap everything up into a nice neat bundle. This title is perfect for the eleven or twelve year old just discovering the world of comics. And by making the young star a girl, the book opens up to the oft-aloof female market.
