National Comics
(Comic Magazines, 1940-1949)
©1946 Comic Magazines (Quality)
Begun in 1940, National Comics was published by the now-defunct Quality comics under their Comic Magazines imprint. Each giant-sized issue packed in a wide variety of features, from gag strips like “Salty Waters” and “Windy Breeze” to crime adventures starring Steve Wood or Sally O’Neil, Policewoman.
National Comics is best remembered today, however, for introducing the comic super-hero Uncle Sam. Looking exactly like the figure in the army recruiting ads, this character had both super-strength and the ability to see into the future. He used these abilities to battle enemies of liberty everywhere, particularly the Axis forces in World War II. Following Quality’s demise as a publisher, Uncle Sam would move over to DC where he would eventually become a member of the Freedom Fighters.
