One of the oldest and longest-running underground titles (bettered only by Weirdo), Yellow Dog started life as an underground newspaper before becoming a regular-sized publication with the combination issue #13-14. Despite some nice Robert Crumb art, the earliest issues were very insubstantial, consisting largely of dope-oriented vignettes and scatological humor. Issues from #7 up were considerably better, although still with a fair proportion of filler material each issue. Highlights included Gilbert Shelton’s Freak Brothers (#7–10), Crumb’s Mr. Natural (#8) and some great art from Robert Williams (#7, 9-10), Kim Deitch (#9-10) and Skip Williamson (#11-12).

The first comic-sized issue was the best of the run, containing substantial strips by Crumb and S. Clay Wilson, and a nice Nard’n’Pat story from Jay Lynch. After this the title increasingly came to be seen as a showcase for new talent, and again, most issues were patchy, although there was still a lot to admire. Greg Irons developed from a psychedelic artist into a cartoonist with some bite, and this is reflected in his fine strips in #13-14 and #17–20. Other notable contributors were Justin Green (#15, 19, 21, 22), Trina Robbins (#19, 20, 23, 25) and Bill Griffiths (#18-20). Young cartoonists Bob Armstrong (#23) and Howard Cruse (#24) also got their breaks in Yellow Dog, though both were to progress to greater things. ~DAR
