Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s legendary run on Fantastic Four (Vol. 1) is considered by many to be the best single run of a comic book title…ever! But the end of that stellar run in 1970 was abrupt, coming seemingly out of nowhere. This twelve-issue limited series by co-plotter/artist Erik Larsen (Savage Dragon), co-plotter/scripter Eric Stephenson (Badrock), and a legion of others—including Bruce Timm (The Batman Adventures: Mad Love), Keith Giffen (The Heckler), Chuck Dixon (Nightwing), Jeph Loeb (Superman), and Michael Golden (Micronauts)—takes place between FF #’s 100 and 101. It operates on the idea of a big Lee/Kirby send-off that would have been the crowning achievement of an unbelievably creative run. Here, the writers toss in every possible FF concept—perhaps even the Baxter Building’s kitchen sink—and the artists ape “the King” in every panel. A high-octane trip down memory lane for longtime fans and a fun-filled introduction to the Marvel Universe of yesteryear for new ones.
