McHale’s Navy
(Dell, 1963)
™ and © Dell Publishing Co.
McHale’s Navy was essentially Sgt. Bilko on the ocean. Ernest Borgnine portrayed Quinton McHale and was much nicer than Bilko, but essentially the program showed that the Navy is about as incompetent as the Army and they are subject to recruiting the same type of goof-offs, gamblers and nincompoops that would appear on Bilko as well. Future Carol Burnett Show star Tim Conway also regularly appeared as the always-flustered Joe Flynn, star of countless Disney comedy films. Two feature films were also made, as well as this comic book series and a comic book based on the first feature film.
