During the early years of the Gundam saga, when Earth first starting edging towards war with the space colony Zeon, mobile battle suit pilots are being trained at Ecoel du Ciel, a remote military academy. There, 15-year-old Asuna is failing her classes, which is troubling for the shadowy cabal “The Council,” which desperately wants to produce psychic “Newtype” warriors. But her crush on her classmate Shin inspires her to do better.

Asuna is a normal girl, worrying about grades, her chest measurements, and fitting in—which isn’t easy, seeing as her father is wanted for war crimes and she comes from a space colony. In Volume 2, the cast goes into outer space, where Asuna has a strained reunion with her mother and flashes back to her uncomfortable first days at school.

There are bits of both Starship Troopers and Neon Genesis Evangelion to be found in this agreeable soap opera drawn in a highly illustrative style. Each volume is also loaded with helpful background material on the characters and their world.
