Kabuki (Vol. 7)

David Mack’s work is an acquired taste. A variety of art styles and techniques can be found in any given issue, from impressionist to collage to paint to abstract. What results is less of a comic book and more of a work of art.

It’s debatable whether the fusion of art styles helps or hinders the story. The first-person perspective and lack of speech balloons means that much of the story is told in an expository fashion, while the art itself is filled with abstract images. Even the narrative uses non sequitur frequently, and such an approach teeters on the edge of incomprehensibility. It’s a direct descendant from Bill Sienkiewicz and his work on Elektra: Assassin.

Fortunately, Mack is an expert at what he does and through the entire jumble, he gets Kabuki from point A to point B. Where she goes from there will be interesting to follow for fans, but will be a bit of a learning curve for the uninitiated. Not to say that it isn’t worth the effort, because it is.
