Little Scrowlie

The skull– and cat–centric Little Scrowlie, which exhibits H.P. Lovecraft as well as Gahan Wilson influence, is about a spoiled (and possibly possessed) goth-chic who thinks nothing of dropping several hundred dollars on a few items of clothing, while simultaneously badmouthing a trendy Gap girl. She hates the idea of frequenting Starbucks, but goes there anyway because they make the best “double decaf lofat lattes.” Such is the life of a hypocritical hipster (and her friend, a black-clad suburbanite who listens to death music and steals her “Mother’s Little Helpers”).

The goth-girls are interesting, and the issue has some nice satirical moments, but the stars of the show are the ghost-seeing cats, who do all sorts of playful little things, such as lap up some of the coffee (scrowl!) and knead their little bed before falling to sleep. Actually, the true star is artist Jennifer Feinberg, whose trippy lettering, spooky-cute designs, and warped perspectives the oddball story could not do without.
