Mercy

    (Vertigo, 1993)
™ and ©1992 J.M. DeMatteis and Paul Johnson

This dark, insightful one-shot title focuses on a mysterious entity which embraces a despairing man eagerly awaiting death. Joshua Ross, his consciousness buried in a coma, looks up to see Mercy. She takes him throughout the world, introducing him to an Indian boy driven to self-immolation, an old woman trapped by her memories, and a marriage poisoned by unspoken resentments. One by one, Mercy touches them and gives them what they so desperately need: a touch of hope. Suddenly, Joshua realizes that death is not an exit from despair, and the oblivion he wanted to embrace doesn’t seem so sweet after all.
