Space Usagi (Vol. 3)

™ and ©1996 Usagi Studios

Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo moved over to Dark Horse Comics in 1996 from its former home at Mirage. The Usagi spinoff Space Usagi came to Dark Horse as well in this three-issue mini-series.

Space Usagi owes much to Star Wars in terms of theme and characters. Here the futuristic descendent of Miyamoto Usagi uses his ancestor’s samurai swords (adapted now to “surge” like a lightsaber) in defense of Lord Kiyoshi and the White Star Castle. With the battle against longtime enemies the Kajitori won, Usagi now accompanies his master Kiyoshi as they go to retrieve their clan’s fortune from its secret hiding place. No sooner are they underway, however, than the party is attacked by a shapeshifting monster—as well as by what appears to be their old friend, the pirate Rhogen!
