Pewfell

Pewfell will be a familiar name to followers of online comics; Whelon’s daily strip has been appearing on ModernTales.com for years. Followers already know of wizard wannabe Pewfell Porfingles, an unremarkable inhabitant of the magic city Spirekassle who lives an unremarkable life in an unremarkable house with his wife Tina the Warrior Princess.

The stories, while amusing, are mostly, well, unremarkable. The shorter stories of the first volume fare better, for the lightweight humor is just enough to carry the stories’ length. But the lack of any real gut-busting gags in the second make this more of a chore than a pleasure. The drawn-out story of Pewfell getting sucked into a cult is simply too long and directionless.

The look and style of the books are reminiscent of French creator Lewis Trondheim’s Dungeon or Oddballz. But Whelon is either unable or simply not trying to emulate Trondheim’s dry sense of humor, leaving little else to give the series its own feel or identity. Existing fans might want to enjoy this hardcopy version, but curious newcomers are probably best off just checking the strip out online.
