Golden Age Secret Files

    (DC, 2001)
™ and ©2001 DC Comics

Like other books in this series, (JLA Secret Files, Green Lantern Secret Files, The Flash Secret Files), pinup pages with capsule histories of prominent and supporting characters is the focus of this title. But rather than a broad sweep of the entire Golden Age, this title concentrates primarily on one character, The Crimson Avenger, who in the Post-Crisis continuity, is the first costumed “mystery man” in the DC Universe.

In an intriguing story drawn in a simplistic Golden Age style by Cliff Chiang, Clark Kent is assigned to discover the motives and origin of The Crimson Avenger. To that end, he interviews the Justice Society of America, whose reminisces encapsulate their own histories. Only a senile Johnny Thunder however, knows the Crimson Avenger’s story, which is revealed to the reader alone. In a moving sequence, Thunder recalls that The Crimson Avenger told him of his origin. Writer John Ostrander, deftly employs a bit of time travel to rightly replace Superman to his seminal role.
